# Add informed consent to an AI moderated study

Require participants to sign a custom informed consent document before your session.

To take part in your Dscout study, you can require participants to sign custom informed consent documents before they can begin. When enabled, these documents must be agreed to by all participants, regardless of whether they're part of Dscout's Scout Panel or recruited directly by you (even if you've opted to skip participant sign-up).

{% hint style="info" %}
**Note:** To add informed consent documents to a study, you must first work with your Dscout account team to upload your documents into Dscout. For more information, see [Custom informed consent](/getting-started/research-basics/custom-informed-consent.md).
{% endhint %}

Once your Dscout account team has added your documents, you can add them to studies as you build them.

{% hint style="warning" %}
**Warning:** Informed consent must be added to a study prior to launch. You can't add it later.
{% endhint %}

**To add informed consent to a study:**

{% step %}
In the builder, click the **Study settings** (gear) icon in the top-right corner.

{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Select the necessary document from the **Informed consent** drop-down.

{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Click **Save**.
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

Participants will be required to review and sign your custom informed consent before they can take part. To preview how participants will see it, view your study in test mode. ## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://help.dscout.com/ai-moderated-studies/create-an-ai-moderated-study/add-informed-consent-to-an-ai-moderated-study.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
