| Applies to | AI moderated studies |
Conversation questions allow participants to engage in a real-time, back-and-forth dialogue with an AI moderator rather than answering a single static question. This helps you achieve the depth of a moderated study at the scale of an unmoderated study. Conversation with task questions are also available with additional settings.
When participants reach a conversation question in your study, the AI moderator relies on your pre-determined question objective to decide which topics to cover and how deep to probe on responses.
Conversation question settings
When adding a conversation question to your study, you’ll configure your question’s settings in the center of the builder:
Here’s a breakdown of each setting:
| Setting | Description |
|---|---|
| Question objective |
What you hope to achieve with this portion of your study. Here, describe your goals, including specific questions you want answered and any other context the AI moderator should know. Then, click Generate guide to turn those goals into an outline for the AI moderator to follow. Tip: Once you’ve generated your guide, you can edit it directly to ensure it meets your research needs. Or, return to your question objective and click Edit objective to make higher-level changes. Then, click Regenerate guide. |
| Moderation guide (displayed once generated) |
The prompts and instructions the AI moderator will follow when conducting participant sessions. Here, make any adjustments to the specific questions or topics the AI moderator has generated from your question objectives. Tip: If you want to make major adjustments to the moderation guide, you can adjust your question objective and regenerate. |
Conversation with task settings
Conversation with task questions offer two additional settings in the right sidebar:
Here’s a breakdown of each option:
| Setting | Description |
|---|---|
| Ask follow-ups |
When enabled, the AI moderator will ask additional questions as needed to gather more information from the participant. By default, this setting is enabled. |
| Stay on task URL |
When enabled, participants will stay on your designated task URL while the AI moderator asks follow-up questions. By default, this setting is disabled. |
Add a conversation question to a study
You’ll add conversation questions on the AI moderator tab of your study.
To add a conversation question:
- Navigate to the AI moderator tab of your study.
- Click + Add in the center of the builder or in the left sidebar.
- Under AI moderated, select Conversation or Conversation with task. A conversation question is added to the builder.
- Enter a Question objective.
- Click Generate guide. The moderation guide is generated and displayed.
- Finalize the Moderation guide. Or, adjust your question objective and regenerate.
- (Conversation with task only) Add a website or prototype Task URL.
- Click Done.
Now, you’ve successfully added a conversation question to your study. When participants reach this question, the AI moderator will conduct a real-time conversation following the moderation guide, dynamically asking follow-up questions to get the details you’re looking for.
Analyze a conversation question
From the Responses tab of your study, you can access insights collected through each conversation question.
Here, you’ll find an AI summary generated across all participant responses as well as summaries generated for each individual participant:
Note: Because the AI moderator dynamically adjusts the conversation for each participant, summary headings may differ across responses.
