Navigate an interview session
Once you’re in an interview session, it’s important to know what tools are at your disposal, as well as how to access them. Refer to the image and table below for help navigating an interview session:
Copy link to session button (1)

Copies the session’s share link to your clipboard. You can share this link with the participant or other moderators/observers to grant them quick access.
Note: This share link will not grant guests access to the session. You must create a guest-specific share link from the Manage tab of your study. For more information, see Invite observers and guests to an interview session.
Collaborator count (2)

Displays the number of people currently in the session. Click the number to view user names organized by session role.
Session timer (3)
✅ Moderators ✅ Observers ✅ Guests
Displays the elapsed time of the session. The timer begins once the moderator clicks Start call and ends when the moderator clicks End session.
End session button (4)
✅ Moderators ✅ Observers (Exit session) ✅ Guests (Exit session)
Ends the call for everyone present, including the participant and observers/guests.
Chat tab (5)
✅ Moderators ✅ Observers ❌ Guests
Allows you to send messages to the participant and/or your collaborators. Select the participant’s name or Collaborators to switch between chats with each audience. For more information, see Chat during an interview session.
Stim tab (6)

Displays all stimuli added to your study. Click Share beside an item to share it with the participant. They will be prompted to share their screen in order to view the selected media, prototype, or URL. For more information, see Share stimuli during an interview session.
Notes tab (7)

Allows you to take notes during an interview session. Notes are saved along with their timestamp and author information for reviewing during analysis. For more information, see Take notes during an interview session.
Markers tab (8)

Displays any marked times created during the interview session, including timestamps, labels, and author information. For more information, see Create markers during an interview session.
Close sidebar button (9)
✅ Moderators ✅ Observers ❌ Guests
Collapses the sidebar and expands the camera view of yourself and the participant.
Timeline (10)
✅ Moderators ✅ Observers ✅ Guests
Shows your current position in the interview session based on the session’s intended length (30 minutes or 1 hour).
Tip: When creating markers during an interview session, green lines will appear above the timeline to denote the marked time.
Mark time button (11)
✅ Moderators ✅ Observers ❌ Guests
Creates a marker at the current time in the interview session. When clicked, a marker is immediately created and accessible in the Markers tab, and a window is displayed allowing you to add an optional marker label.
Enable/disable camera button (12)
✅ Moderators ❌ Observers ❌ Guests
Toggles your camera on or off. Blue indicates that your camera is on. Red indicates that your camera is off.
Mute/unmute button (13)

Toggles your microphone on or off. Blue indicates that your microphone is on. Red indicates that your microphone is off.
Share screen button (14)

Shares your screen with the participant and any observers or guests. When clicked, your browser’s window selection is displayed. Choose which window or screen you wish to share, then click Share.
Closed captions button (15)

Toggles real-time closed captioning on or off for the interview session. Every individual controls their own closed captioning.
Note: Captions default to your study’s selected language regardless of the language spoken during a session.
Session settings (16)
✅ Moderators ❌ Observers ❌ Guests
Displays the session settings window. Here, you’ll find the following options:
Camera: Allows you to select alternate camera devices for use during your session.
Blur background: Allows you to blur the background of your own video feed. When toggled ON, your background will be blurred. When toggled OFF, your background will not be blurred.
Audio input: Allows you to select alternate microphones for use during your session.
Noise cancellation: Allows you to minimize the amount of background noise picked up by your microphone. This is useful if you conduct your sessions in a loud environment and is enabled by default.
Audio output: Allows you to select alternate speakers or headphones for use during your session.
