# Manage appearance of an interview study

You can make your interview study engaging and welcoming by customizing its appearance. You can add a custom hero image, apply your company’s branding, and more.

{% hint style="info" %}
**Note:** This article covers managing the visual appearance of your study. If you’re wondering how to customize the language of your study, see [Manage language of an interview study](/interview-studies/create-an-interview-study/manage-language-of-an-interview-study.md).
{% endhint %}

## Study name

The study name gives participants an idea of what you’ll discuss during their interview session. An external-facing study name is required (this is the name that participants will see), but you can also include a private, internal-facing study name for easy identification among your collaborators.

{% hint style="warning" %}
**Note:** You cannot change your study’s name once it’s been launched. Be sure to make any desired changes before opening your study to participants.
{% endhint %}

**To change your study’s external name:**

{% stepper %}
{% step %}
Navigate to the **Setup** tab of your study. Then, select **Details**.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Click the current study name in the top left corner.

![](/files/6a5c4731123d2b7aa7a51250641b3fe5b6734f9f)
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Enter your desired study name.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Click **Enter** or **Return** on your keyboard to save your changes.
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

Now, your study name is saved. Participants will see this name when joining your study or on your study’s webpage if you’re using one to recruit.

**To change your study’s internal name:**

{% stepper %}
{% step %}
Navigate to the **Setup** tab of your study. Then, select **Details**.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Click anywhere in the **Specs** section.

![](/files/27fc29fa716220d60d75b3d269e7c2110553b29f)
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Click **Advanced options**. The **Internal name** field is displayed.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Enter the desired **Internal name**.

{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Click **Done**.
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

Now, your internal study name is saved. This name will only be visible to your collaborators in Dscout, and it will appear on the study card on the project details page.

## Hero image

The hero image is the first thing participants see when accessing your study. You can upload your own hero image or choose one provided by Unsplash.

**To change your study’s hero image:**

{% stepper %}
{% step %}
Navigate to the **Setup** tab of your study. Then, select **Details**.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Click anywhere in the **Specs** section.

![](/files/27fc29fa716220d60d75b3d269e7c2110553b29f)
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Under **Hero image**, search for a photo on the **Photos** tab to select an image from Unsplash. Or, click **Upload your own** to choose a local file.

{% hint style="info" %}
**Note:** If an image is already selected, click **Choose a new image** to change it.
{% endhint %}

![](/files/f4b625529e66b1ac093f04a2b216e14e4a701c16)

{% hint style="info" %}
**Note:** The maximum file size for uploaded photos is 3MB.
{% endhint %}
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Click **Save image selection**.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Click **Done**.
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

Now, your hero image is saved. Participants will see this image when joining your study or on your study’s webpage if you’re using one to recruit.

## Company branding

Adding your organization’s branding to your Dscout studies gives them a consistent look and feel for participants who might take part in multiple studies for you.

**To add company branding to your study:**

{% stepper %}
{% step %}
Navigate to the **Setup** tab of your study. Then, select **Details**.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Click anywhere in the **Specs** section.

{% hint style="success" %}
**Tip:** If your organization has default custom branding set up at your Dscout account level, you can enable that by clicking **Add default branding**. For more information, see [Company branding](/account-management/organization-account-settings/company-branding.md).
{% endhint %}
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Click **Done**.
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

Now, your organization’s branding is saved and will be displayed to participants when joining your study or on your study’s webpage if you’re using one to recruit.

## Overview

Your study’s overview should offer participants a description of what you expect to cover in their interview session. However, you don’t want to give away enough information that participants can infer too much about your research objectives. Give enough detail that participants know what they’re signing up for, but not enough that they know what answers you’re looking for.

**To add an overview to your study:**

{% hint style="info" %}
**Note:** Interview study overviews are not automatically translated to match your designated study language. What you enter here is what will be displayed to participants, so use whatever language makes the most sense for your participants.
{% endhint %}

{% stepper %}
{% step %}
Navigate to the **Setup** tab of your study. Then, select **Details**.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Click anywhere in the **Overview** section.

![](/files/d7f7ea5b1a1afed92b0efbdc74fdca3e13644cec)
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Enter an overview for your study in the text box. You can format your text in the following ways:

* `*bold*` = **bold**
* `_italic_` = *italic*
* `<https://examplelink.com>` = [https://examplelink.com](https://examplelink.com/)
* `[Sample link](https://examplelink.com)` = [Sample link](https://examplelink.com/)

![](/files/18dc92763768ba544fed61bda740f56904affc89)
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Click **Done**.
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

Now, your study overview is saved and will be displayed to participants when they join or on your study’s webpage if you’re using one to recruit.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://help.dscout.com/interview-studies/create-an-interview-study/manage-appearance-of-an-interview-study.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
