# Request payments in an interview study

When you’re ready to issue incentives to your participants, you can view and manage their payment status in the **Payment status** column of the **Manage** view of your study:

Here’s a breakdown of the possible payment statuses you may see:

* **- (dash):** No payment has been requested for the participant. (You’ll typically see this status for participants who have not completed their interview session.)
* **Requested:** You (or one of your collaborators) has requested payment be processed for this participant. Next, your Dscout Research Advisor will review the request and reach out if they have any questions.
* **Approved:** Your Dscout Research Advisor has reviewed and approved your payment request. The request has been submitted to Dscout’s Finance team for finalization.
* **Sent:** The final payment has been sent to the participant via PayPal and will be in their account within 10 business days.

You can also quickly view the status of all requested payments by selecting **Payments** above your participant list:

{% hint style="info" %}
If you selected **Non-monetary reward** or **No reward** during study setup, or if you opted not to have payments paid via Dscout, you are responsible for managing any and all incentives outside of the Dscout platform. You will not see any payment options within your study.
{% endhint %}

## Request individual payments

When a participant has completed their interview session, you can request their payment. When you request a payment, your Research Advisor is notified. They will then review the request and work with the Dscout Finance Team to issue the reward.

**To request payment for an individual participant:**

{% stepper %}
{% step %}
Navigate to the **Manage** tab of your study.

{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Select the participant you want to pay. The action toolbar is displayed.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Click **Request payment**. The payment modal is displayed.

{% endstep %}

{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

Now, a notification is sent to your Dscout Research Advisor, who will review the payment request. Once they do, they will work with Dscout’s Finance team to issue the incentive to the participant through PayPal. You can view the status of payments in the **Payment status** column of your study. For more information on each status, refer to the breakdown above.

## Request payments in bulk

If you want to request payments for multiple participants at once, you can do so. The same process applies as for processing payments individually: when you request a set of payments, your Research Advisor is notified. They will then review the request and work with the Dscout Finance Team to issue the applicable rewards.

**To request payments for participants in bulk:**

{% stepper %}
{% step %}
Navigate to the **Manage** tab of your study.

{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Select the participants you want to pay using the checkboxes beside their names. The bulk action toolbar is displayed.
{% endstep %}

{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

Now, a notification is sent to your Dscout Research Advisor, who will review the request. Once they do, they will work with Dscout’s Finance team to issue the payments through PayPal. You can view the status of payments in the **Payment status** column of your study. For more information on each status, refer to the breakdown above.

## Edit or cancel a payment request

If you incorrectly request a payment, you have a brief window in which you can edit or cancel the request.

{% hint style="warning" %}
Payment requests cannot be edited or canceled once they have been approved by your Dscout Research Advisor. If you have questions or concerns about a payment that has already been approved, reach out to your Research Advisor directly.
{% endhint %}

**To edit or cancel a payment request:**

{% stepper %}
{% step %}
Navigate to the **Manage** tab of your study.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Select **Payments**. All requested payments for your study are displayed.

![](/files/aaa157837b4ef53f5d3f81fd58e74f7723cb7f9c)
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Select the payments you want to edit or cancel using the checkboxes beside each participant’s name. The action toolbar is displayed.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Click **Edit payment** or **Delete payment**. The applicable modal is displayed.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
**(If editing)** Confirm a new payment amount, then click **Save**.

<div align="left"><img src="/files/403cd9f42132c4084fd0225a4d7e52919c39c966" alt="" width="375"></div>

**(If deleting)** Click **Delete** in the confirmation modal.

{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

Now, your selected payments are updated or deleted. If deleted, you can request payments for the selected participants again from the **Manage** tab. See [Request individual payments](#h_01KKEH39J5C6PWBPPGPHAAANQW) or [Request payments in bulk](#h_01KKEH39JHZ1TE0F7KTERR4BY5) for more information.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://help.dscout.com/interview-studies/manage-an-interview-study/request-payments-in-an-interview-study.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
