# Invite panelists to a Dscout study

This integration allows you to manage your panels in Private Panels while running research studies in Dscout. Respondent data will sync both ways.

There are two ways to invite your panelists to a Dscout study: **from within your Dscout study**, or **from within Private Panels**. Which one you use depends on your study type. Both are covered below.

## Requirements

* Our team must enable this integration for your account. If you don't have access to Private Panels and want to learn more, reach out to your Dscout Account Director.
* You must already have panelists in your panel. See [Create, upload, and manage panelists](/private-panels/panel-management/create-upload-and-manage-panelists.md).

Each invite method has its own additional requirements — see the sections below.

## Supported Dscout study types

## Inviting through Dscout

Use this method to add panelists while you're building a usability test, media survey, or AI moderated study in Dscout. You select **Invite from Dscout's Private Panels** as the study's recruitment approach, then pick your panelists from inside the study builder.

{% hint style="info" %}
This method is only available on Dscout usability tests, media surveys, and AI moderated studies. If you're conducting another study type, see [Inviting through Private Panels](#inviting-through-private-panels).
{% endhint %}

{% hint style="info" %}
You can only use one recruitment method per study. So, you can't use Private Panels to add participants to a study where you've already used another recruitment method.
{% endhint %}

Participants invited this way are considered your own, meaning they are not part of Dscout's standard pool of Scouts, nor will they be added to our Scout pool by participating in your study.

The following video shows how you can invite Private Panels participants from within your Dscout study:

{% embed url="<https://share.synthesia.io/a738a6cd-1507-4f3a-8903-b8de998c9b0b>" %}

**To add panelists to a Dscout study:**

{% stepper %}
{% step %}
When creating your study, select **Invite from Dscout's Private Panels** as the recruitment approach.

{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Click **Continue**.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Select whether you want your participants to use a **Mobile** device or a **Desktop** to complete your study.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Click **Continue**.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
(Usability test only) For desktop studies, select whether you want to record participants' screens and cameras or only their screens. For mobile studies, select whether you are testing a prototype, a website, or an app. Then, click **Continue**.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Enter a **Title** for your study.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Click **Create study**.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
In the builder, click **Add from Private Panels** in the left sidebar. A page opens showing your Private Panels panelists.

{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Select the participants you want to invite to your study.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Click **Add to study** in the top-right corner. A modal appears confirming your participants have been added.

<div align="left"><img src="https://content.gitbook.com/content/T7fhyut5rrQHwe5QRGot/blobs/bWtumj1sSHxJzYZKD17K/48970693083028" alt=""></div>
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Click **Return to study**.
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

Now, you'll return to the study builder in Dscout. Here, you'll see a list of your selected participants. To add more participants from Private Panels, click **Add participants**. To remove a participant, click the Trash icon above their name.

When you launch your study, your selected participants will automatically receive an email from Private Panels inviting them to start the study. And if you're adding participants to a study that's already been launched, your new participants will receive an email invitation immediately.

### Inviting through Private Panels

Use this method to invite panelists from a Private Panels study to an existing Dscout study. This method works for every supported Dscout study type.

{% hint style="info" %}
The Dscout study must already be **Launched** before you can invite panelists to it this way, because the invitation email links panelists to the study's splash page.
{% endhint %}

To invite your Private Panels respondents to a Dscout study, navigate to a **Study**, then click **Bulk Actions > Invite to Dscout**.

![](https://content.gitbook.com/content/T7fhyut5rrQHwe5QRGot/blobs/t1PHngRMLM1qy91kKwjn/38053681309716)

This will open up a new email message, which will contain an automatically-generated button, linking to the Dscout study splash page.

![](https://content.gitbook.com/content/T7fhyut5rrQHwe5QRGot/blobs/wKfUXhpO5XoFPGrFCn7Y/38053681313300)

Send this email, and your respondents will receive their invites shortly in their inbox.

![](https://content.gitbook.com/content/T7fhyut5rrQHwe5QRGot/blobs/toOb7AHAAe5vSQCcXnLL/38053681315604)

When the respondent clicks on **Go to activity**, they will land on the study splash page, with their information pre-filled.

From here, they will login, accept the study, and perform the tasks.

### Data sync

Once a respondent completes a study, the integration will "sync" this data back to the Private Panels Study. Synced data is also displayed in past participation for each panelist. These are the pieces of data supported:

* Status. For more information, including examples of each status, see [Update respondent status](/private-panels/studies/update-respondent-status.md).
* Incentive amount
* Session date and time (if applicable)

### Respondent authentication for studies

When respondents are invited into Dscout through this integration, they will follow a "passwordless" authentication flow.

* Respondents **without** an existing Dscout account will land on a splash page with their information prefilled. They do not need to set a password, so account creation is just 1 click. Afterwards, they are logged in and can accept the study.
* Respondents **with** an existing Dscout account will land on a splash page with their information prefilled. The next step for them is to "verify their email via magic link" for security purposes. Afterwards, they are logged in and can accept the study.

### Incentive payments

Here are the ways that your respondents can be paid in Dscout, broken down by Study Type and recruiting method (how respondents enter the study).

**None:** there is no ability to send incentive payments

**Dscout:** researcher initiates payment in Dscout, and respondents are paid

**Dscout (automatic):** respondents are automatically paid without researcher intervention

**Private Panels:** researchers can pay respondents via a Private Panels study, and take note of their payments within Dscout

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://help.dscout.com/private-panels/integrations/private-panels-integrations/invite-panelists-to-a-dscout-study.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
