# Survey redirects and language

Survey redirects can be used to send respondents to your social media, panel signup forms, external surveys, and more. This feature enables tracking of participation in external surveys or research activities (e.g. Qualtrics, UserTesting, etc).

## Redirect after completing a screener

Private Panels comes with a built in redirect option at the end of every screener. In **Screeners** **Redirects** **and Language**, you can decide where a respondent will be sent based on whether they qualify or are disqualified during the screening process.

You can also add in **merge tags** to the URLs to add in information like *PanelistUuid*. This can be useful if you need to redirect panelists to a specific page based on their profile, or send information like the *PanelistUuid* to another panel software.

## Redirect from a Private Panels screener to an external survey, and track participation

If you are using Private Panels to screen respondents before sending them to an external tool, you must create a 2nd screener in Private Panels to "track participation" of that external activity.

{% stepper %}
{% step %}
After you build your screener, turn on the **Redirect** toggle.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
To decide what to enter into the **Redirect URL input field**, follow the [Redirect back to Private Panels](/private-panels/screeners/survey-redirects-and-language.md) guide to choose how "redirecting back to Private Panels" will work for your respondents.

* If you are following Redirect Option 1, use the {StudyPanelistUuid} as the user/token identifier (***NOTE:** Make sure to use StudyPanelistUuid and not PanelistUuid*). The 3rd party tool will have instructions how to pass an ID to them from your panel tool, for example: <https://surveytool.com/survey/abc123?token={StudyPanelistUuid}>
* If you are following Redirect Option 2, you can simply paste the URL of the external tool, for example: <https://surveytool.com/survey/abc123>
  {% endstep %}
  {% endstepper %}

## Send email to an external survey, and track participation

If you want to send your panelists directly to an external survey without screening, and want to redirect the panelist back to Private Panels to track participation - follow this guide.

{% stepper %}
{% step %}
Create a new **Screener,** which we will use to "Track external participation" based on this guide [Redirect back to Private Panels](/private-panels/screeners/survey-redirects-and-language.md).
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
In the new screener's Email builder tab, create a link to the 3rd party survey tool:

* If you are following Redirect Option 1, use the {StudyPanelistUuid} as the user/token identifier. (***NOTE:** Make sure to use StudyPanelistUuid and not PanelistUuid*).
  {% endstep %}

{% step %}
In **Study Overview**, you can now send the screener email. Private Panels will update links from <https://surveytool.com/survey/abc123?token={StudyPanelistUuid}> to something like <https://surveytool.com/survey/abc123?token=gg3f4856-442a-4cd0-b5f7-b75b483e1ga3>.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Respondents will be able to click on the previous link, answer the survey, and be redirected to Private Panels automatically. Now in **Study Overview** you'll be able to see that they "responded" to that screener.
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

## Redirect back to Private Panels

If you want to track participation in an external survey, and redirect back to Private Panels, you have two options.

If the external survey tool **has the ability** to accept URL parameters (aka. query strings), and also redirect those same URL parameters back to Private Panels, follow Redirect Option 1.

If the external survey tool **does not** have the ability to accept URL parameters and redirect based off custom data, follow Redirect Option 2.

### Redirect Option 1

In this option, we use the external survey to redirect back to Private Panels and automatically track participation. You need to create a brand new screener for this to work, and title it something like "Redirect back from ...".

Do not send or share this screener directly with respondents, it will only be used to track participation by redirecting back to this screener.

{% stepper %}
{% step %}
Create a **Screener** in Private Panels. Title it something like "Redirect from ...".
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Go to **Screener Settings** tab and scroll down to **Screener UUID**. It will look something like *ab8f4856-722a-4cd0-b5f7-b75b483e1de9*.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
In the **external tool**, find the settings area for redirects. Use the "fill in" format below to generate this URL.

**USA:** <https://app.dscout.com/panels-api/redirect/FILL\\_IN\\_SCREENER\\_UUID?sp\\_uuid=FILL\\_IN\\_MERGE\\_TAG\\_FOR\\_StudyPanelistUuid>

**Europe:** <https://api.eu.panelfox.io/api/redirect/FILL\\_IN\\_SCREENER\\_UUID?sp\\_uuid=FILL\\_IN\\_MERGE\\_TAG\\_FOR\\_StudyPanelistUuid>
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Replace **FILL\_IN\_SCREENER\_UUID** with the value from Step 2.

* In the USA it will look similar to: <https://app.dscout.com/panels-api/redirect/ab8f4856-722a-4cd0-b5f7-b75b483e1de9?sp\\_uuid=FILL\\_IN\\_MERGE\\_TAG\\_FOR\\_StudyPanelistUuid>
* In the **EU** it will look similar to: <https://api.eu.panelfox.io/api/redirect/ab8f4856-722a-4cd0-b5f7-b75b483e1de9?sp\\_uuid=FILL\\_IN\\_MERGE\\_TAG\\_FOR\\_StudyPanelistUuid>
  {% endstep %}

{% step %}
Replace **FILL\_IN\_MERGE\_TAG\_FOR\_StudyPanelistUuid** with the mapping your 3rd party survey tool provides, such as **\[ID]**. This is used in Optimal Workshop.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

* In Optimal Workshop, follow [this documentation](https://support.optimalworkshop.com/en/articles/2626893-integrate-with-a-participant-recruitment-panel).
* In Survey Monkey, use a combination of [Custom Variables](https://help.surveymonkey.com/en/surveymonkey/send/custom-variables/) and [Redirects](https://help.surveymonkey.com/en/surveymonkey/create/survey-end-page/).
* In Qualtrics, follow [this documentation](https://www.qualtrics.com/support/survey-platform/survey-module/survey-flow/standard-elements/passing-information-through-query-strings/).
  {% endstep %}

{% step %}

{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Optional: you can specify “status” value in your redirect URL. If a value is not specified, the status will be recorded as “Qualified”. You can set up the following statuses:
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

* Qualified: status=qualified
* Disqualified: status=disqualified
* Incomplete: status=incomplete
* Over Quota: status=over-quota
  {% endstep %}

{% step %}

{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Your final redirect link you configure within the external tool may look something like this:
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

* In the USA: <https://app.dscout.com/panels-api/redirect/ab8f4856-722a-4cd0-b5f7-b75b483e1de9?sp\\_uuid=\\[ID]\\&status=\\[STATUS>]
* In the EU: <https://api.eu.panelfox.io/api/redirect/ab8f4856-722a-4cd0-b5f7-b75b483e1de9?sp\\_uuid=\\[ID]\\&status=\\[STATUS>]
  {% endstep %}

{% step %}
After your respondent completes the external survey, they will be automatically redirected back to Private Panels and see an outcome screen:

* If the status is Complete or Incomplete: "Thank you! Your responses have been successfully recorded. We really appreciate your time and input."
* If the status if Disqualified or Over Quota: “Thanks for your interest in our survey. Unfortunately, we've either reached our target number of responses or you don't quite fit the criteria for this study. We appreciate your time!“
  {% endstep %}
  {% endstepper %}

Then, you will be able to see the "Screener Answered" timestamp for every respondent who completed the screener.

### Redirect Option 2

In this option, we use the external survey to redirect back to Private Panels and manually track participation by asking the respondent to fill out their email.

{% stepper %}
{% step %}
Create a **Screener** in Private Panels. Title it something like "Redirect from ...".
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
In the **Screener Builder** tab, click **Add Element Contact Info**, which will add 4 two-way synced questions.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Go to **Screener Screener Settings**, and update **Who can take the screener?** to **Anyone**.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Scroll down, and copy the **Public Link**, which you can now use as the "redirect" from your 3rd party survey system.
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

## Language

Private Panels allows you to change the language of the buttons that respondents encounter in your Screeners. These include **Next**, **Submit**, **Cancel**, and **Validation** text. Note: These changes will only affect the current screener.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://help.dscout.com/private-panels/screeners/survey-redirects-and-language.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
