# Expressiveness

During analysis, Dscout can automatically detect how expressive applicants are in their responses. Expressiveness lets you get an idea for how engaged each participant was while submitting their answers to your screener.

Expressiveness is determined by a proprietary machine learning algorithm. Some factors that play into an applicant's expressiveness include:

* Linguistic features of participants’ open-ended and video responses.
* Metadata from their videos.
* Their ability to follow instructions.

When reviewing responses, you can sort based on expressiveness. Sorting by expressiveness is a good way to randomize responses during analysis, and it also helps you find higher quality responses first.

**Screeners, usability tests, media surveys, intercept studies, AI moderated studies:**

Navigate to the **Participants** view of the **Responses** tab. Then, click the filter icon at the top of your participants list. Here, you can select to either sort from **Most expressive to least** or **Least expressive to most**:

To sort by Expressiveness in diary studies: Expand the "Sort by" section in the top right of the Entries Grid in Diary, then select Expressiveness. Participants will automatically be sorted from most to least Expressive.
