# View applications and select participants

Participants will have the ability to submit applications as soon as you launch your screener (read more about submitting for review in [Optional pre launch review for screeners and missions](/study-basics/design-a-mission/optional-pre-launch-review-for-screeners-and-missions.md)).

You'll first land in the **Questions** view of the **Responses** tab. This shows an aggregate view of answers to your questions:

![](/files/70efe72b96085ee69eeccfc725633e9961542628)

The Participants view shows an individual application, along with quick navigation to other applicants.

![](/files/562603ab4a0246f0eba71ead8bf9ddb53a2a0ec1)

Use participant ratings, filters, and sorting tools to help pick participants that are right for your mission.

## Potential fit

All participants who are not knocked out will come into your screener as **Eligible**. Participants who have been knocked out (i.e., terminated or disqualified) by questions in your screener will not appear in the applications.

From there, you can choose Good, Possible, or Bad fits to determine which participants you want to invite to your mission:

* **Good Fit**: Good for the mission and a good quality application
* **Possible Fit**: A backup option for your mission
* **Bad Fit**: Quality application, but not a good fit for your mission
* **Low Quality**: Applications that are identified by the platform's machine learning to be insufficient (if, say, someone answers an unlimited open-end with just a few words)

To label individual participants, select “Eligible” in the righthand sidebar when viewing an entry:

You can also label groups of participants at one time, by selecting the checkbox to the left of each participant avatar.

{% hint style="info" %}
Participants cannot see your labels! This is a feature designed for your personal organization of potential participants.
{% endhint %}

## Filtering by attributes

The filter icon (top right) shows options for sorting your participant applications.

![](/files/1cf9c1c2a67d0182afecb7b85fdb6eb262019303)

Expand this menu to filter by:

* **Close ended responses:** focus on specific answers to a screener question
* **Primary attributes:** filter by participant demographics & behaviors
* **Participant groups:** filter by participant groups you’ve created
* **Tags:** filter by any tags you’ve applied
* **Mission:** filter by any missions participants completed for your team

![](/files/15cdb8f0f974828cd96724d253492deedf76af3a)

All applications views and exports will respect filters you've applied.

## Notes, tags, and groups

When viewing an individual application, you'll see several sections in the righthand sidebar, including "Groups" and "Notes" which can be used to manage and organize your recruit.

### Notes

To make a note, simply type in the comment box in the lower right corner of the individual application, then select **Add note**. Participants cannot see notes. Type “@” followed by a name to mention your colleagues to draw their attention to your notes.

### Tags

Click and drag across open-ended answers or video transcriptions to tap, copy, or highlight text:

* Click the tag option to create or apply an existing tag. (See more about Dscout's tagging system in [Create and manage tags](/study-basics/analyze-missions/create-and-manage-tags.md).)
* Click the **Highlight** button that pops up above the highlighted text to add that highlight to the Notes sidebar.
* Click the **Copy as Quote** button to copy the quote, pre-formatted for you, to paste elsewhere.

### Groups

Create participant groups by clicking **Add to group** with an individual application. Add applicants to groups individually by checking the listed participant group:

![](/files/3bf9d04c0ca076356fb6ad220a82b9d81c332a37)

Add participants to participant groups in bulk by selecting at least one application (from the Questions view), selecting anyone you want in a given group, and clicking **Add to Group**.

## Sorting participants

You can sort participants by a number of characteristics:

* Application date: sorts applicants based on date of application
* Name: sorts applicants alphabetically by their first name

![](/files/bc9e957c061639affd95e50d24738455c81adff3)

You're able to sort participants in ascending or descending order. The default sort is Date, from newest to oldest; so, the most recent applications will be first in your view.

## Programming insight

Want to know which questions and answer choices disqualified participants? Check out the Programming insight in the Overview tab (this chart appears only after a screener is launched).

## Export screener data

To [export your screener data](/study-basics/analyze-missions/how-can-i-export-my-data.md), you'll click the export icon (a box with an arrow pointing down) in the top right corner of your screen. Export options include:

* **Application Photos and Videos:** Bulk download all media files in a .zip archive folder
* **Application Data:** A .csv file of all non-media questions and answers
* **Application Notes:** If you've written notes (described above), a .csv of all notes
* **Print/PDF:** 1 application per page PDF file, including the data you specify on the righthand side of the dialogue box
* **Crosstab:** A cross-tabulation determined by the options you select in the dialogue box

{% hint style="info" %}
Not seeing the export button? That likely means your Dscout access is limited; check out [User roles and permissions](/getting-started/dscout-quickstart-guide/user-roles-and-permissions.md) for details on seat types, and chat with your Account Owner about adjusting your seat access if needed.
{% endhint %}

## Close your screener

When you no longer need additional participants to apply for your mission(s), it's time to close your screener. You'll still be able to access all of your applications, as well as add participants to your mission. Closing your screener will simply prevent new participants from applying.

{% hint style="info" %}
Screeners will also automatically close two weeks after your launch date, or as soon as you reach your application limit.
{% endhint %}

Just click the **Close** button in the top right corner. Once a screener is closed, it cannot be reopened.

Next, launch your [diary study](/diary-studies/what-are-diary-studies-in-dscout/set-up-a-diary-study.md), [usability test](/usability-tests/manage-a-usability-test/launch-a-usability-test.md), [media survey](/media-surveys/manage-a-media-survey/launch-a-media-survey.md), or [interview study](/interview-studies/manage-an-interview-study/launch-an-interview-study.md) with the participants you've selected.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://help.dscout.com/recruit-participants/dscout-scout-panel/view-applications-and-select-participants.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
