# Question types in screeners

{% hint style="info" %}
**Note:** This article details information about standalone screeners (used for recruitment only). For information regarding available question types in usability tests and/or media surveys, see [Question types in usability tests](/usability-tests/what-are-usability-tests-in-dscout/question-types-in-usability-tests.md) and [Question types in media surveys](/media-surveys/what-are-media-surveys-in-dscout/question-types-in-media-surveys.md).
{% endhint %}

## Overview Tab

From the Overview tab, you can leverage [Targeting attributes](/recruit-participants/dscout-scout-panel/targeting-attributes.md) to reach participants based on demographics and some preferences/behaviors (reducing the overall number of screening questions you'd need to include).

### Targeting Attributes & Primary Attributes

As you look to target your audience, Dscout offers a growing list of [Targeting attributes](/recruit-participants/dscout-scout-panel/targeting-attributes.md) available to you across categories like Device, Shopping, Subscriptions, Work, etc. These Targeting Attributes (often referred to as TA or TAs) are located in the Overview tab.

Primary Attributes are a subset of Targeting Attributes that are required to be answered by all of the participants in our scout pool. These attributes are automatically included as filters in analysis regardless of whether or not you choose to target by them. As you choose which attributes to target by in the Overview tab, you will find Primary attributes are distinguished with a star as shown below (Ethinicity is a Primary Attribute, while Work place is a Targeting Attribute).

By adding an attribute to your screener, you control which answers qualify. In the example below, Homemaker, Retired, Student, and Temporarily Unemployed are the only options selected, so only participants that chose one of those answers would find the screener. Those who are Employed full-time (30 hours +) or Employed part-time would not find the screener in this example.

Remember, this is fully customizable -- you could choose any combination here!

## Screener tab

You’ll find both knockout questions (questions that require termination logic) and standard questions in the **Screener** tab.

We recommend including no more than 20 questions in your screener, one of which can prompt applicants to take a picture, and one of which can ask for a video or screen recording.

Knockout questions automatically disqualify applicants based on their answer choice. These applicants will be skipped to the end and will not count against the screener application limit (only qualified applications will count).

![](https://content.gitbook.com/content/IKfn7RcT4CW9XaIbqAdd/blobs/KrdneKYwfQRGiORtUwcS/34716965645972)

In the **Screener** tab you can include:

* [Knockout logic](/recruit-participants/dscout-scout-panel/knockout-questions.md)
* [Must select logic](/study-basics/design-a-study/must-select-logic.md)
* [Quotas](/study-basics/question-types/question-settings-and-organization/using-question-quotas.md)
* [Skip logic](/study-basics/design-a-study/skip-logic-in-screeners.md)
* **Disqualify if all selected:** this is a toggle on multiple choice (multiple select) questions that will flag any applicants that select every option. This is on a per question basis, and shouldn't be enabled if you believe that an applicant could truthfully select every option.
  * If an applicant selects all choices on a multiple choice question (and this setting is enabled), the applicant will be rejected, and their application will not be included in the qualified applications you receive.
  * If “Other” or “None of the Above” is a response choice, an applicant will be rejected if they select all of the programmed choices. “Other” and / or “None of the Above” do not need to be selected to disqualify the applicant for selecting all responses.

In addition to questions, you can leverage [Targeting attributes](/recruit-participants/dscout-scout-panel/targeting-attributes.md) to reach participants based on demographics and some preferences/behaviors (reducing the overall number of screening questions you'd need to include).

### Question types

The table below outlines which Dscout question types you can use in a screener:

| Question type                                                                                             | Description                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                      |
| --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| [**Multiple choice**](/study-basics/question-types/closed-ended-questions/multiple-choice-questions.md) | <p>Provide applicants with a list of options to choose from. Applicants can select a single answer (single select) or several (multiple select).</p><p>In addition to <a href="/recruit-participants/dscout-scout-panel/knockout-questions.md">knockout logic</a>, multiple select questions allow you to include <a href="/study-basics/design-a-study/must-select-logic.md">must-select</a> logic. Use this logic to designate response choices that applicants must select to qualify.</p> |
| [**Typed response**](/study-basics/question-types/open-ended-questions/typed-response-questions.md) | Ask applicants for a written response. You can limit responses to 140 characters or apply no limit. |
| [**Checkpoint**](/study-basics/question-types/question-settings-and-organization/checkpoint-questions.md) | Introduce a series of questions, give applicants a moment to pause ("You're doing great, more than halfway done!"), or offer additional context without asking a question. |
| [**Scale**](/study-basics/question-types/closed-ended-questions/scale-questions.md) | Provide applicants with a numerical scale for ratings. Scale questions allow you to specify a scale as large as 0-10 and to define the **Start value** and **End value** labels for your applicants. (Suggested character limit for labels of 50-100 characters.) |
| [**Ranking**](/study-basics/question-types/closed-ended-questions/ranking-questions.md) | <p>Ask applicants to rank your answer options (for example, rank the following pizza toppings from best (1) to worst (6)).</p><ul><li><strong>Rank all:</strong> Ask applicants to rank all of the answer options listed.</li><li><strong>Custom limit:</strong> Ask applicants to rank at least x number of answer options, at most x number of answer options, or exactly x number of answer options listed.</li></ul><p>You can also randomize rank choices, add an “Other (Tap to Type)” write-in option (always anchored at the bottom of the list, even when randomization is used), and, for “Rank all” questions, let applicants mark rank options as N/A. N/A isn't available for “Custom limit” ranking questions.</p> |
| [**Number**](/study-basics/question-types/closed-ended-questions/number-questions.md) | Ask applicants to provide a number, up to 9 digits long. (Be sure to specify the unit in your question prompt.) |
| [**Photo**](/study-basics/question-types/open-ended-questions/photo-questions.md) | Have applicants take or upload a photo. PNG and JPEG files are accepted. |
| [**Video**](/study-basics/question-types/open-ended-questions/video-questions.md) | Have applicants record or upload a video. MP4 and MOV files are accepted, with a maximum recording length of 1 minute. |
| [**Screen recording**](/study-basics/question-types/open-ended-questions/screen-recording-questions.md) | Have applicants record their screen for up to 2 minutes. Applicants can choose what they show you, or you can add a starting URL for them to visit first. |

* **Randomize choices:** use this to present multiple choice answer options in a random order to applicants.
* **"Other (Tap to Type)":** use this to provide a write-in response option. Note that this option will always be anchored at the bottom of the list even when randomization is used.
* **"None of the Above":** use this to allow applicants to select "None of the Above." It will be excluded from randomization and cannot be chosen in combination with other response options.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://help.dscout.com/recruit-participants/what-are-dscout-screeners/question-types-in-screeners.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
