# Multiple choice questions

Study type

Availability

Screeners

true

Usability tests

true

Media surveys

true

Intercept studies

true

AI moderated studies

true

Diary studies

true

Multiple choice questions give participants a list of answer options to choose from. Use a multiple choice question when you want answers you can count and compare across participants, rather than open-ended responses you'll need to read and collate manually.

Every multiple choice question can either be:

* **Single select:** The participant picks exactly one option. Options appear as radio buttons.
* **Multi-select:** The participant can pick more than one option. Options appear as checkboxes, and you can set a minimum and maximum number of selections.

### Multiple choice question settings

The settings available on a multiple choice question depend on which type of study you're building. Select your study type below for more information.

{% hint style="info" %}
**Note:** Multiple choice questions are the only question type that can both **screen** participants (through knockout logic and quotas) and **collect data** in an actual study. The settings available to you depend on whether you're adding a screener question (on the **Screener** tab) or a study question.
{% endhint %}

{% tabs %}
{% tab title="Screeners" %}
Add multiple choice questions on the **Screener** tab of your builder. When you auto-recruit participants, multiple choice is the **only** question type available in a screener.

| **Multi-select** | When disabled, applicants choose one option. When enabled, applicants can choose more than one. |
| **Min/Max** | With **Multi-select** enabled, set the fewest and most options an applicant can choose. |
| **Choice behavior**                       |
Set each answer choice to Knockout (disqualifies the applicant), May select, or Must select. | **Quotas on responses** | Limit how many applicants can be accepted for a given answer choice. For more information, see [Using question quotas](/study-basics/question-types/question-settings-and-organization/using-question-quotas.md). |
| **Disqualify if all selected** | On a multi-select question, disqualifies applicants who select every option, which is a common sign of someone clicking through without reading. |
| **Randomize choices**                     |
Presents answer options in a random order to each applicant.

Note: Randomization isn't supported on Partner Panels screeners—this setting will not be displayed.

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                               |
| **"Other" option** (optional)             |
Adds an Other (tap to type) row so applicants can write in an answer that isn't on your list. The row sits below your written choices and is excluded from randomization.

You can't drag or delete it while this setting is enabled, but you can rename it: Click into the row and type over the default text. | **"None of the above" option** (optional) |
Adds a None of the above row, anchored below the Other row. Applicants can't select it in combination with any other choice, and it's excluded from randomization.

Like the Other row, you can't drag or delete it but you can rename it. | **Stimuli** and **Stimuli randomization** | Attach images or media for applicants to react to, and optionally present them in a random order. For more information, see [Question stimuli](/study-basics/question-types/question-settings-and-organization/question-stimuli.md). |
| **Skip logic** (optional) | Route applicants to a later question or end the screener based on their answer. For more information, see [Skip logic in screeners](/study-basics/design-a-study/skip-logic-in-screeners.md). |

**Note:** On an auto-recruit screener, every question needs at least **2** answer choices to launch, including single-select questions. Screeners that aren't auto-recruiting follow the usual minimums: 1 answer choice for single-select, 2 answer choices for multi-select.

{% tab title="Usability, intercept, and media surveys" %}
Add multiple choice questions on the **Usability test**, **Study**, or **Media survey** tab of your builder.

{% hint style="success" %}
**Tip:** When auto-recruiting participants, you can add multiple choice questions on the **Screener** tab of your study as well. For information on settings available in that case, refer to the [Screeners table](#screeners) in this article.

Add multiple choice questions on the **AI moderator** tab of your builder.

Participants answer multiple choice questions in the on-screen interface rather than out loud. The AI moderator reads your prompt, waits for the participant to make a selection, and doesn't read the answer options aloud—they're already visible on screen.

| Setting                                   | Description                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                         |

| **Prompt** | The question participants answer. |
| **Choices** | The answer options a participant picks from. | **Type** | Choose **Single select** or **Multiple select**. |
| **Minimum/Maximum number of choices** | On a **Multiple select** question, set how few and how many options a participant must choose. Available only when the question has more than one answer choice. |
| **Randomize choices** | Presents answer options in a random order to each participant. |
| **"Other" option** (optional)             |
Adds an Other (tap to type) row so participants can write in an answer that isn't on your list. The row sits below your written choices and is excluded from randomization.

You can't drag or delete it while this setting is enabled, but you can rename it: Click into the row and type over the default text. Turning the option off removes any skip logic attached to it.
|
| **"None of the above" option** (optional) |
Adds a None of the above row, anchored below the Other row. Participants can't select it in combination with any other choice, and it's excluded from randomization.

Like the Other row, you can't drag or delete it but you can rename it. Turning the option off removes any skip logic attached to it.
                                    |
| **Headline** | Makes the participant's answer the title of their diary entry, instead of the date and time the entry was submitted. |
| **Stimuli** (optional) | Attach images or media for participants to react to. For more information, see [Question stimuli](/study-basics/question-types/question-settings-and-organization/question-stimuli.md). |
| **Stimuli randomization** | Presents attached stimuli in a random order to each participant. Appears once the question has more than one stimulus attached. |
| **Skip logic** (optional) | Route participants to a later point in the activity based on their answer. For more information, see [Skip logic in diary studies](/study-basics/design-a-study/skip-logic-in-diary-studies.md). |

### Add a multiple choice question to a study

{% stepper %}
{% step %}
Navigate to the tab of your builder where you want the question—**Questions**, **Usability test**, **Study**, **Media survey**, **AI moderator**, or **Screener**, depending on your study type.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Click **+ Add** in the center of the builder or in the left sidebar. (**+ Add question** in diary studies.)
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Select **Multiple choice**.

{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Enter your **Prompt**.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Add your answer choices. Type them one at a time, or paste a list to add several at once.

{% hint style="success" %}
**Tip:** You can add choices in bulk. Copy a list from a spreadsheet or document and paste it into the add-choice field—each line becomes its own answer choice.
{% endhint %}
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Configure the remaining settings. For details, see [Multiple choice question settings](#multiple-choice-question-settings) above.

{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Click **Done**.
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

#### Group and randomize multiple choice questions

Multiple choice questions work with Dscout's question-organization features:

* [**Question groups**](/study-basics/question-types/question-settings-and-organization/question-groups.md) keep related questions together and can randomize the order they're presented in.
* [**Multi-variate testing**](/study-basics/question-types/question-settings-and-organization/multi-variate-testing.md) presents different concepts or design variants to different participants.
* [**Question banks**](/study-basics/question-types/question-settings-and-organization/question-banks.md) let you save a multiple choice question and reuse it across studies.

{% hint style="info" %}
**Note:** Skip logic isn't available on a question inside a randomized question group—the group's random order and a fixed skip destination would conflict.
{% endhint %}

### Analyze a multiple choice question

Multiple choice results appear as a horizontal bar chart, one row per answer choice, with a count of the participants who answered the question below it. You can sort the rows in their **Original order**, by **Smallest to largest**, or by **Largest to smallest**.

#### Counts and percentages

By default, each row shows the raw number of participants who chose that option. Click the **Chart settings** icon in the top right to show percentages instead, or show both.

In chart settings on diary studies, you have additional options of highlighting the largest response, rounding numbers, or enabling grayscale.

{% hint style="warning" %}
**Important:** Percentages are calculated against the number of participants who answered the question, not the number of selections made. On a **multi-select** question, participants can choose more than one option, so the percentages down the column can add up to more than 100%. This is expected, not a reporting error.
{% endhint %}

#### Individual responses

Open a participant's entry or session to see their response by itself. A multiple choice response shows your full list of answer choices, with the options that participant selected highlighted and the ones they didn't leave greyed out. When a participant uses the **Other** option, their write-in text appears on the **Other** row, directly beneath its label.

{% hint style="success" %}
**Tip:** In usability tests, intercept studies, media surveys, and AI moderated studies, the **Other** row in the Questions view becomes expandable when at least one participant has written something in. Expanding it lists the individual write-in responses.
{% endhint %}

#### Filter by multiple choice responses

Open the **Filters** panel and expand **Close ended responses**. Each multiple choice question gets its own section with a checkbox per answer choice, so you can narrow your results to the participants who chose a given option. Knockout choices are listed for reference but can't be used as filters.

#### Export multiple choice responses

Click the **Download chart data** button to download the displayed responses chart as a CSV or as a PNG. The CSV uses the same counts and percentages as the chart on screen, so it carries the same respondent-based denominator described above.

{% hint style="info" %}
**Note:** The study-wide crosstabs export rolls every write-in answer up into a single **Other** row rather than listing them individually, so it won't show you what participants actually typed.
{% endhint %}

### Frequently asked questions

<details>

How many answer choices can I add?

A single-select question needs at least **1** answer choice to launch, and a multi-select question needs at least **2**. There's no maximum—add as many as your participants will reasonably read.

Auto-recruit screeners are stricter: Every question there needs at least **2** choices, even a single-select one.

Two things will stop you saving the question:

* **Duplicate choices**, where two choices have the same text.
* **Blank choices**, where a choice row has been left empty.

To reorder your choices, drag one by its handle.

</details>

<details>

I switched my question back to single-select. Why are my minimum and maximum values gone?

Minimum and maximum selections only apply to a multi-select question, so switching back to single-select clears the values you'd set. Switching to multi-select again starts you from scratch—you'll need to enter them a second time.

Decide whether the question is single-select or multi-select first, then fine-tune the rest of its settings. On a diary study, that's the **Type** setting; everywhere else it's **Multi-select**.

Per-choice skip logic works the same way in the other direction: Switching a question from single-select to multi-select clears it, because every choice on a multi-select question has to share one skip destination.

</details>

<details>

Why don't I see quota settings on my multiple choice question?

Quotas are a screener setting. They only appear on questions on your **Screener** tab—so if you're looking at a question in the study itself, on the **Usability test**, **Study**, **Media survey**, or **AI moderator** tab, or in a diary study, there's no quota setting to find.

To limit how many participants you accept for a given answer, ask that question in your screener instead. For more information, see [Using question quotas](/study-basics/question-types/question-settings-and-organization/using-question-quotas.md).

</details>

<details>

Why can't I randomize answer choices on my Partner Panels screener?

Randomization isn't supported on Partner Panels screeners, so the **Randomize choices** setting won't appear when you're recruiting from a partner panel. It's available on every other screener and study type.

</details>

<details>

A participant typed an answer that matches one of my answer choices. Why isn't it counted in that choice's bar?

Write-in answers are always counted as **Other**, even when a participant types something identical to one of your listed choices. If someone types "Yes" into the **Other** field instead of selecting your **Yes** option, their answer adds to the **Other** bar, not to **Yes**.

This is worth keeping in mind when you read results: a choice's count reflects only the participants who actually selected it. Expand the **Other** row to see the write-ins and judge whether any of them belong with a listed choice.

</details>

<details>

Why is only one answer choice being selected on my multi-select screener question?

Check whether you've set **Max** to 1 while also marking one of the choices **Must select**. That combination forces the must-select choice to be the only answer an applicant can give—they can't add anything to it—so every application comes back with that single choice selected.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://help.dscout.com/study-basics/question-types/closed-ended-questions/multiple-choice-questions.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
