# Question banks

<table><thead><tr><th>Study type</th><th data-type="checkbox">Availability</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td><strong>Screeners</strong></td><td>true</td></tr><tr><td><strong>Usability tests</strong></td><td>true</td></tr><tr><td><strong>Media surveys</strong></td><td>true</td></tr><tr><td><strong>Intercept studies</strong></td><td>true</td></tr></tbody></table>

{% hint style="info" %}
**Note:** Question banks are only available on **Plus**, **Select**, and **Enterprise** plans.
{% endhint %}

Saving frequently used questions for future use can speed up your research and ensure consistency across projects. Question banks let you do just that, offering a place where you and your collaborators can save questions and access questions saved by others.

{% hint style="success" %}
To kick off your question bank, check out [**this spreadsheet**](https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1F9a5MWMPQnt8o4D3D4nHJ-UwuxM06-D4C88sb8s4-DM/edit?usp=sharing) of over 500 sample questions on our People Nerds blog.
{% endhint %}

## View and edit banked questions

You can access all your banked questions (as well as those saved by others in your Dscout account) from the **Question banks** settings page. Here, you can add, edit, and clone questions.

{% hint style="info" %}
Unless you are an account owner, administrator, or workspace lead, you can only edit your own questions. However, you can still add questions saved by other users to your missions.
{% endhint %}

**To access your question bank:**

{% stepper %}
{% step %}
In the sidebar navigation, click your Dscout account name. A drop-down opens displaying the accounts you belong to.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Click the **Settings** icon beside the account where you want to view the question bank. The **Account management** page is displayed.

![](/files/9a348ab4cbba6fcb6e1b2ab24f60f0a9f4eaf7ab)
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Select the **Question banks** tab. The list of banked questions across your projects is displayed.

![](/files/80918bc06c00b1e70c20c74d45907f07e465cfad)
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Click the question you want to edit.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Make the necessary changes. You can edit things like the question title, prompt, save location, and more.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Click **Save**.
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

To locate specific questions, use the search bar or the filter options at the top of the page to narrow down your view.

{% hint style="info" %}
Use the heart icon to mark questions you use even more often than others in your question bank as favorites. You can then filter your view to find your favorites faster.
{% endhint %}

## Bank a question

You can add new questions to your question bank from the **Question banks** settings page itself or while building a screener or mission.

{% hint style="info" %}
Contributors can’t bank their own questions, but they can add questions banked by others to their missions.
{% endhint %}

To bank a question from the Question banks settings page:

{% stepper %}
{% step %}
In the sidebar navigation, click your Dscout account name. A drop-down opens displaying the accounts you belong to.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Click the **Settings** icon beside the account where you want to view the question bank. The **Account management** page is displayed.

![](/files/9a348ab4cbba6fcb6e1b2ab24f60f0a9f4eaf7ab)
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Select the **Question banks** tab. The list of banked questions across your projects is displayed.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Click **+ Add new question**.

![](/files/5f47873089de6d633cdc049de29bee4c318b0dbf)
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Select what type of question you want to add. The settings for the selected question type is displayed.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Enter a **Title**.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
(If applicable) Select a **Save to** location. You can either save the question to a specific workspace or make it available to everyone in your Dscout account. If your account doesn’t have workspaces, the question will automatically be saved at the account level. For more information on workspaces, see [Creating and navigating Dscout workspaces](/getting-started/workspaces-and-projects/creating-and-navigating-dscout-workspaces.md).

![](/files/158bbfed52907338d5201c47a1207eadd8f2ae85)
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Complete the required fields and settings for your question.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Click **Save**.
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

Now, your question is added to your question bank and will be visible to your collaborators. To edit the question, simply click it in the question list, make your changes, and click **Save**.

If you’re building a screener or mission and decide you want to save one of your questions to your question bank, you can do that directly from the builder.

To bank a question while building a screener or mission:

{% hint style="info" %}
Questions banked from a screener or mission will retain most of their settings. For example, a question with multi-select enabled will be saved with this setting enabled. However, task URLs are not saved when banking task questions.
{% endhint %}

{% stepper %}
{% step %}
In the builder, add the question you want to save to your mission.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Click the ellipses at the top right of the question.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Click **Save question**. The **Save as new question** dialog appears.

![](/files/8d53efbbf88082a4d0e11bdd34bfa612e6a34255)
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Enter a **Title**.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
(If applicable) Select a **Save to** location. You can either save the question to a specific workspace or make it available to everyone in your Dscout account. If your account doesn’t have workspaces, the question will automatically be saved at the account level.

![](/files/32d5456d456d627fb0443d3aec7cdf56411a84b0)
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Click **Save question**.
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

Now, your question is added to your question bank. You can view it from the **Question banks** settings page or add it to other screeners or missions using the steps below.

## Add a banked question to a mission or screener

Once you’ve added a question (or a few!) to your question bank, you can add them to your missions or screeners directly from the builder. However, you’ll only be able to add questions that are supported by your screener or mission type. For example, you’ll only be able to add saved Task questions to usability tests.

{% hint style="info" %}
Banked questions maintain the settings they had enabled when originally saved. Be sure to double-check the settings of each question once you’ve added it to your mission.
{% endhint %}

{% stepper %}
{% step %}
In the builder, click **+Add** (or **+Add a screener question**) in the sidebar or beneath your last question. Or, click the + icon between existing questions.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Click **Add from question bank**. The **Question bank** dialog appears, displaying all of your saved questions (as well as a few sample questions courtesy of Dscout).

![](/files/fd5aeb5af95073c9d0aa5140cd6b62ce3d4cfadb)
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Select a question(s).
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Click **Add question to mission/screener**.

![](/files/39bc34bafaf406ecb831f9860be924cf6bd80bdb)
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

Now, your selected question(s) are added to your mission or screener exactly as you’d previously saved them.

## Clone a banked question

If you have several questions that involve a similar prompt or settings, you can create saved versions of each iteration quickly by cloning a question you already have saved. Then, you can make the adjustments needed right in your question bank rather than recreating and saving each question individually.

{% stepper %}
{% step %}
In the sidebar navigation, click your Dscout account name. A drop-down opens displaying the accounts you belong to.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Click the **Settings** icon beside the account where you want to view the question bank. The **Account management** page is displayed.

![](/files/9a348ab4cbba6fcb6e1b2ab24f60f0a9f4eaf7ab)
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Select the **Question banks** tab. The list of banked questions across your projects is displayed.

![](/files/a3f75045f56e6ca3e594c4f215b9e9247d0e8dff)
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Find the question you want to clone.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Click the **Clone** icon.

![](/files/5c0afbc171375fffd7c2f9b9ae3ec2ba07c3254c)
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

Now, a copy of the question is created and you’re able to edit the settings as needed. When you’re done, click **Save** to save this new version of the question.

## Delete a banked question

You can delete unneeded questions from your question bank from the **Question banks** settings itself or while building a screener or mission.

{% hint style="info" %}
Account owners and administrators can delete any question. Workspace leads can delete questions from the workspaces they lead. All other users can only delete the questions they have saved themselves.
{% endhint %}

To delete a banked question from the Question banks settings page:

{% stepper %}
{% step %}
In the sidebar navigation, click your Dscout account name. A drop-down opens displaying the accounts you belong to.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Click the **Settings** icon beside the account where you want to view the question bank. The **Account management** page is displayed.

![](/files/9a348ab4cbba6fcb6e1b2ab24f60f0a9f4eaf7ab)
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Select the **Question banks** tab. The list of banked questions across your projects is displayed.

![](/files/37873b3b8b82d6a09b903e97c4e4bb097efdd13b)
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Find the question you want to delete.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Click the **Delete** icon. A confirmation modal is displayed.

![](/files/7dea57427a876430f1833be901f33ee2ecc79e96)
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Select **Yes, I want to delete this question** and click **Delete question** to confirm.
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

To delete a banked question while building a screener or mission:

{% stepper %}
{% step %}
In the builder, click **+Add** (or **+Add a screener question**) in the sidebar or beneath your last question.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Click **Add from question bank**. The **Question bank** dialog is displayed.

![](/files/40c72655194a6e5d033364b46d836409621436d4)
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Click the ellipses at the top right of the question.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Select **Delete**. A confirmation modal is displayed.

![](/files/45ea145e9f07a27ca6c60b0ddecc2b7b19aa7a1c)
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Select **Yes, I want to delete this question** and click **Delete question** to confirm.
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

Now, the question is no longer saved in the question bank. However, the question will still be present in any screeners or missions where it’s already in use, so be sure to delete the question from those too if necessary.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://help.dscout.com/study-basics/question-types/question-banks.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
