# Build from a template

{% hint style="info" %}
This article discusses templates for screeners, usability tests, media surveys, intercept studies, and AI moderated studies. For information on templates in diary studies, see [Diary study templates](/diary-studies/what-are-diary-studies-in-dscout/diary-templates-overview.md).
{% endhint %}

Once a template is saved to your Dscout account or workspace, you can use it to create a new screener or study. What happens next depends on what the template holds.

**To start from the template library:**

{% stepper %}
{% step %}
In the sidebar navigation, click **Template library**.

### What happens next?

{% tabs %}
{% tab title="Screener-only template" %}
An auto-recruit screener template has no study to run yet, so after you select a project, you're asked **How do you want to build your study?**

* **Start from scratch:** Set up the study type, device, and recording option, then build your questions.
* **Use a template:** Pick an existing, compatible study template to pair with your screener.

Click **Create** (or **Next**, if you chose to use a template) to continue. You're then taken to the builder to finish setting up your new study.

{% hint style="info" %}
If the study template you pick was built with **Choose during study setup** as its device, you're asked to choose a device (and a recording option, if applicable) before your new screener and study are created.
{% endhint %}
{% endtab %}

{% tab title="Study-only template" %}
A study-only template has no screener yet, so after you select a project, you're asked to choose a **recruiting approach**. Then, you're asked **How do you want to build your screener?**

* **Start from scratch:** Build your own screening criteria (plus country and device, if your recruiting approach needs them).
* **Use a template:** Pick an existing screener template that matches your recruiting approach.

You're then taken to the builder to finish setting up your new screener.

{% hint style="info" %}
If this study template was built with **Choose during study setup** as its device, you're asked to choose a device (and a recording option, if applicable) once your screener is set — before your new screener and study are created.
{% endhint %}
{% endtab %}

{% tab title="Screener and study template" %}
A screener and study template already has everything it needs. After you select a project and click **Create**, your new screener and study are created immediately and open directly in the builder — no further setup needed.

{% hint style="info" %}
If the template's device was left as **Choose during study setup**, you're asked to choose a device (and a recording option, if applicable) before your new screener and study are created.
{% endhint %}
{% endtab %}
{% endtabs %}

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://help.dscout.com/study-basics/study-templates/build-from-a-template.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
