# Edit a template

{% hint style="info" %}
This article discusses templates for screeners, usability tests, media surveys, intercept studies, and AI moderated studies. For information on templates in diary studies, see [Diary study templates](/diary-studies/what-are-diary-studies-in-dscout/diary-templates-overview.md).
{% endhint %}

Templates can be edited, duplicated, or deleted from within the template library of your Dscout account.

### Edit a template's settings

The template creator, an **Account Owner**, or an **Admin** can edit a template's name, description, and save location directly from the template library.

{% hint style="info" %}
**Note:** To change a template's actual questions or screening criteria, open the **Options** drop-down on the template, then click **Edit template**.
{% endhint %}

{% stepper %}
{% step %}
In the sidebar navigation, click **Template library**.

<div align="left"><figure><img src="https://3976082747-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FIKfn7RcT4CW9XaIbqAdd%2Fuploads%2FpPFFIAPJwcx5V45ruz81%2FTemplate_library.jpg?alt=media&amp;token=ae424f18-9c82-4601-91fb-aa9c0eb14938" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Locate the template you want to edit.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Click the **Options** icon in the top right corner of the template's card.

<div align="left"><figure><img src="https://3976082747-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FIKfn7RcT4CW9XaIbqAdd%2Fuploads%2FUzUB1gQ7X0MUZkX1SFEY%2FEdit_template%20(4).jpg?alt=media&amp;token=13cf897a-f536-4f07-9c6e-cc94383bd31b" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Select **Edit settings**. The template settings modal is displayed.

<div align="left"><figure><img src="https://3976082747-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FIKfn7RcT4CW9XaIbqAdd%2Fuploads%2F0bXFN0Ds2UqhD2GciRid%2FEdit_template%20(3).jpg?alt=media&amp;token=7e5eb357-cc79-45cc-8fcc-5604d752e227" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

{% hint style="success" %}
**Tip:** If you want to edit a template's actual *questions* or *setup*, select **Edit template**.
{% endhint %}
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Make the necessary edits to the **Template name**, **Template description**, and **Save to** location.

<div align="left"><figure><img src="https://3976082747-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FIKfn7RcT4CW9XaIbqAdd%2Fuploads%2FXEo35JaAZe04OIvolF2d%2FEdit_template.jpg?alt=media&amp;token=cd02107e-05b3-40df-ac6c-7c2fe928dda5" alt="" width="375"><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Click **Save edits**.
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

Now, the template's settings are updated. These changes are reflected for everyone who accesses the template going forward.

### Duplicate a template

You can duplicate a template to create an exact copy of it, saved to the same location as the original. This is useful if you want to make changes without affecting the original template.

{% hint style="info" %}
**Note:** When duplicating a template, you cannot adjust the template's initial settings, including recruiting approach, device type, and more. To adjust these settings, create a new template from scratch.
{% endhint %}

{% stepper %}
{% step %}
In the sidebar navigation, click **Template library**.

<figure><img src="https://3976082747-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FIKfn7RcT4CW9XaIbqAdd%2Fuploads%2FpPFFIAPJwcx5V45ruz81%2FTemplate_library.jpg?alt=media&amp;token=ae424f18-9c82-4601-91fb-aa9c0eb14938" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Locate the template you want to duplicate.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Click the **Options** icon in the top right corner of the template's card.

<figure><img src="https://3976082747-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FIKfn7RcT4CW9XaIbqAdd%2Fuploads%2FUzUB1gQ7X0MUZkX1SFEY%2FEdit_template%20(4).jpg?alt=media&amp;token=13cf897a-f536-4f07-9c6e-cc94383bd31b" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Select **Duplicate template**. A preview of the template is displayed.

<div align="left"><figure><img src="https://3976082747-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FIKfn7RcT4CW9XaIbqAdd%2Fuploads%2FEOG3ox1NQZsgkLLLZwrj%2FEdit_template%20(2).jpg?alt=media&amp;token=4a623b55-5f9f-4c76-8923-142bb7656d71" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Click **Duplicate** to confirm.
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

Now, a copy of the template is created and you're brought to the builder. Here, you can modify the template's questions, setup, or screener criteria.

### Delete a template

If you no longer need a template, you can delete it from the template library. Deleting a template has no effect on screeners or studies you've already built using it.

{% hint style="info" %}
**Note:** Only the template creator, an **Account Owner**, or an **Admin** can delete a template. For more information, see [User roles and permissions](/getting-started/dscout-quickstart-guide/user-roles-and-permissions.md).
{% endhint %}

{% hint style="warning" %}
**Warning:** Deleting a template removes it for everyone in your Dscout account. Check with your colleagues that a template is no longer needed before you delete it.
{% endhint %}

{% stepper %}
{% step %}
In the sidebar navigation, click **Template library**.

<figure><img src="https://3976082747-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FIKfn7RcT4CW9XaIbqAdd%2Fuploads%2FpPFFIAPJwcx5V45ruz81%2FTemplate_library.jpg?alt=media&amp;token=ae424f18-9c82-4601-91fb-aa9c0eb14938" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Locate the template you want to delete.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Click the **Options** icon in the top right corner of the template's card.

<figure><img src="https://3976082747-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FIKfn7RcT4CW9XaIbqAdd%2Fuploads%2FUzUB1gQ7X0MUZkX1SFEY%2FEdit_template%20(4).jpg?alt=media&amp;token=13cf897a-f536-4f07-9c6e-cc94383bd31b" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Select **Delete**. A confirmation modal is displayed.

<div align="left"><figure><img src="https://3976082747-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FIKfn7RcT4CW9XaIbqAdd%2Fuploads%2FL8QjT7eVzQmOuMKd3q2C%2FEdit_template%20(1).jpg?alt=media&amp;token=0491bc8a-10d9-44b4-aa30-e5675ee70f0c" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Click **Delete template** to confirm.
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

Now, the template is permanently deleted from your Dscout account. Screeners or studies already built using this template aren't affected.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://help.dscout.com/study-basics/study-templates/edit-a-template.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
