# View usability test session recordings

Dscout usability tests are continuously recorded, meaning each participant’s submission is accompanied by a video that spans the entire length of their session. These recordings include the participant’s audio and a recording of the participant’s screen, and they may also include a recording from the participant’s camera depending on how you set up your mission.

{% stepper %}
{% step %}
Navigate to the **Responses** tab of your study.

![](/files/0a642edeebd4f017a23077ca67c494748cc8f4cb)
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Click the **Participants** icon in the left sidebar.

![](/files/d4f2671dec6f35bdc04b2d2ac5375b65c2060e77)
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Select the participant whose session you want to view.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Click **View full recording** at the top of the participant’s response data.

![](/files/f68d3e67c3158f74c61d871a08fab98b2f0dacf6)
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Now, the participant’s session recording is displayed. Here, you can watch the recording in full. By default, the session transcript is displayed to the right of the recording.

{% hint style="info" %}
Session transcripts are great, but sometimes it’s easier to follow a video with subtitles enabled. You can turn these on by clicking the **Settings (gear)** icon beneath the video player and toggling the **Subtitles** option ON.
{% endhint %}
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

## Navigate session recordings

Recordings may be anywhere from a few minutes in length to nearly an hour. But you can use Dscout’s built-in video player to navigate the recording in whatever way works best for you. Refer to the image and table below to understand your playback options:

## View session click data

Usability tests capture click events so you can clearly see when and where a participant clicks while completing the tasks you request of them. This can help you better understand user journeys through your products or webpages and identify areas for improvement or simplification.

{% hint style="info" %}
Click data is only collected on desktop usability tests that require participants to use the Dscout browser extension. For more information, see [Analyze heat maps and click data](/study-basics/testing-prototypes/analyze-heat-maps-and-click-data.md).
{% endhint %}

To view click events for a session, open the **Clicks** tab to the right of the video player:

![](/files/177dc232c309ebdd3ba1a3aee3599c60f33e728c)

Here, you’ll see the exact timestamps for the participant’s clicks as well as what they clicked on (for example, a link or a button).

To learn about click data collected when testing Figma prototypes, see [Analyze heat maps and click data](/study-basics/testing-prototypes/analyze-heat-maps-and-click-data.md).

## View AI notable moments

Dscout AI can help you identify key points in a usability test by highlighting notable moments. These include crucial decisions and comments made by your participants during their session, which offer a great starting point for analysis.

To view AI notable moments, open the **Notable moments** tab to the right of the video player:

![](/files/b2e643eb9efe4d7de414a3d6b078164fb1ffab07)

For more information, see [AI notable moments](/dscout-ai/built-in-ai-features/ai-notable-moments.md).

## Export the session recording

If you want to view or share a session recording outside of Dscout, you can export it. When exporting a session, you can choose whether you want to download the participant’s screen recording, their camera recording (if applicable), or both.

{% hint style="info" %}
Session recordings are exported via .mp4 files. File size will vary depending on the session’s length.
{% endhint %}

{% stepper %}
{% step %}
Click the **Export full session** icon above the video player. An export modal is displayed.

![](/files/88b2dd6ad9d16aea81bfc22724066a0df39c06fb)
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
On the **Recordings** tab, select from the following options:

![](/files/fbcbd1e0fafd8204968f8c5be874aa59c0afb833)

* **Participant’s camera:** Download only the participant’s camera recording. Only available if you selected to record participant cameras while building your study.
* **Screenshare:** Download only the participant’s screen recording.
* **Participant’s camera & screen:** Download both the participant’s screen recording and camera recording. With this option, Dscout creates a single picture-in-picture video. To set which view is prioritized (larger) in the video, click **Flip participant’s camera and screenshare**. To set where the smaller view is placed in the video, click one of the four corners of the diagram.

![](/files/83e07ceaf6b686f170092c8049fefb3ba9d7ce5e)
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Click **Download selected**. A progress banner appears while your video is generated.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Click **Download here** in the progress banner when prompted.

![](/files/def810c9a94c8e75546e1257bc975f04ec3261aa)
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

Now, the session recording is downloaded to your computer. You’ll find it wherever your computer stores browser downloads.

## Export session transcripts and notes

In addition to downloading session recordings, you can also download session transcripts and notes. This is helpful if you want to share session details outside of Dscout.

{% hint style="info" %}
Transcripts and notes are exported via .csv files. File size will vary depending on the session’s length.
{% endhint %}

{% stepper %}
{% step %}
Click the **Export full session** icon above the video player. An export modal is displayed.

![](/files/88b2dd6ad9d16aea81bfc22724066a0df39c06fb)
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
On the **Transcripts and notes** tab, select from the following options:

![](/files/8dfad5726a487b7fc5689d97924c7ea181719cf8)

* **Transcript:** Download the entire Dscout-generated transcript of the session. The resulting .csv file includes your study’s questions, the participant’s answers, and the time in the session those answers were provided.
* **Entry notes:** Download only the manual annotations that were added to a session. The resulting .csv file includes the entry’s date and time as well as any notes added to the session in Dscout.
  {% endstep %}

{% step %}
Click **Generate** beside your selection. A progress banner appears while your export is generated.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Click **Download selected** (or **Download here**) when prompted.

![](/files/33a7e0bc97c173601bdcce863013e05c97e18169)
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

Now, the selected file is downloaded to your computer. You’ll find it wherever your computer stores browser downloads.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://help.dscout.com/usability-tests/analyze-a-usability-test/view-usability-test-session-recordings.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
