Note: This article discusses templates for screeners, usability tests, and media surveys. For information on templates in diary studies, see Diary study templates.
From question sets to incentives, research initiatives may share common elements. Instead of building screeners or studies from scratch every time, templates can help expedite the process. You can save existing studies as templates so you and your team can use them as a starting point for studies in the future.
Save a screener or study as a template
If you have a screener, usability test, or media survey you want to reuse later or share with your team, you can save it as a template. Templates can then be accessed from the template library or when creating a new study.
Note: Only users with Researcher and Collaborator roles in Dscout can create new templates. However, users of all roles can use templates to create new screeners or studies. For more information, see User roles and permissions.
To save a screener or study as a template:
- In the screener or study you want to save, click the More actions icon in the top right corner.

Select Save as template.
Note: A screener or study must be in Drafting mode in order to be saved as a template. You cannot save launched screeners or studies as templates.
- Enter a Template name.
- Enter a Template description.
- (If applicable) Select a Save to location. You can either save the template to a specific workspace or make it available to everyone in your Dscout account. If your account doesn’t have workspaces, the template will automatically be saved at the account level. For more information on workspaces, see Creating and navigating Dscout workspaces.
- Click Save template.
Now, the template is saved to your template library and will be available to you and your collaborators when creating new screeners or studies.
Tip: You can also save a screener or study as a template from the project details page. Simply click the Options icon in the top right corner of the screener or study card then select Save as template.
Create a screener or study from a template
Once a template has been saved in your Dscout account (either by yourself or one of your collaborators), you can use it to create a new screener or study. You can access all templates in the template library. Or, you can use a study template when creating a new study directly in your project.
To use a template from the template library:
- In the sidebar navigation, click Template library. All templates in your Dscout account are displayed.
- Locate the template you want to use to create your screener or study.
- Click Start from template on the template’s card. The start from template modal is displayed.
- Select the Project where you want to create your new screener or study.
- Select one of the following options:
- Duplicate and modify study setup: Copies the template’s questions but allows you to modify recruitment approach, device type, and recording options.

Duplicate: Copies the template exactly as-is, including recruitment approach, device type, and recording options.
If you choose to modify the study setup, you’ll be prompted to complete the initial setup flow. If you choose to duplicate the template as-is, you’ll be brought directly to the builder.
To use a template from within a project:
Note: To create a screener from a template, you must do so from the template library using the steps above.
- Navigate to the Missions tab of your study.
- Click Create mission. The create something new modal is displayed.
- Select Templates in the left sidebar. All study templates are displayed.
- Hover over the template you want to use and click Start from template.
- Select one of the following options:
- Duplicate and modify study setup: Copies the template’s questions but allows you to modify recruitment approach, device type, and recording options.

Duplicate: Copies the template exactly as-is, including recruitment approach, device type, and recording options.
If you choose to modify the study setup, you’ll be prompted to complete the initial setup flow. If you choose to duplicate the template as-is, you’ll be brought directly to the builder.
Edit a template
Template creators, Account Owners, and Admins can edit template names, descriptions, and save location directly from the template library.
Note: If you need to edit a template beyond just its name and description, use the template to create a new screener or study, make the necessary changes, and save this new screener or study as a new template.
To edit a template:
- In the sidebar navigation, click Template library.
- Locate the template you want to edit.
- Click the Options icon in the top right corner of the template’s card.
- Select Edit settings. The template’s settings are displayed.
- Make the necessary edits.
- Click Save template.
Now, the template’s settings are updated. These changes will be reflected for all users who access the template going forward.
Delete a template
If you no longer need a template, you can delete it from the template library. Deleting a template has no effect on screeners or studies you’ve built using the template.
Note: Templates can only be deleted by the template creator or by an Account Owner or Admin. For more information, see User roles and permissions.
To delete a template:
Warning: Deleting a template removes it for everyone in your Dscout account. Verify with your colleagues that a template is no longer needed before you delete it.
- In the sidebar navigation, click Template library. All templates in your Dscout account are displayed.
- Locate the template you want to delete.
- Click the Options icon in the top right corner of the template’s card.
- Select Delete. A confirmation modal is displayed.
- Select Yes I want to delete this template, then click Delete template to confirm.
Now, the template is deleted from your Dscout account. Screeners or studies that have been built using this template will not be affected, but the template will no longer be available for future use.
